A member of a Chinese-American criminal society — what later writers called a tong. The term originally referred to early-19th-century New York street gangs but was repurposed in the 1880s and 1890s for the violent rivalries between San Francisco's and New York's Chinatown tongs. The Brady stories use the word repeatedly.

Usage

“Hunting the King of the Highbinders” (subtitle of one Brady adventure).
